If you enter Kosovo from Albania, North Macedonia or Montenegro, you cannot exit directly into Serbia. Serbia does not recognize the Kosovo border as an international crossing.
Is my car insurance valid in Kosovo?
Kosovo is not part of the Green Card system, so most European motor insurance policies are not valid here.
- Valid: vehicles insured in Albania, North Macedonia and Montenegro.
- Everyone else: you need to buy border insurance.
- Buy it at the border crossing (cash or card) or online in advance at bks-ks.org. Buying online skips the queue.
- It covers third-party liability only, not damage to your own vehicle.

The Serbia rule, explained
If your route includes Serbia, you have two options:
- Enter Kosovo from Serbia and return to Serbia the same way.
- Leave Kosovo through a third country (for example North Macedonia or Montenegro) and enter Serbia from there.
What documents do I need?
- Passport (EU, US, UK, Canadian, Australian and most Western citizens can enter visa-free for up to 90 days)
- Driving license: EU licenses are valid as-is; non-EU licenses need an International Driving Permit (IDP)
- Vehicle registration document
- Proof of insurance
