The Expert trail to Keqekolla Fortress near Prishtina: the history of this late antique Dardanian fort, camping by the walls, and what to know before you go.

A few kilometers northeast of Prishtina, above the village of Keqekollë, a narrow forest trail leads to the walls of a fortress that has stood there for around 1,500 years. Most people driving the road below have no idea it exists.

The history

The fortress, also known as Kekola, dates from late antiquity (4th to 6th century). It sits on a strategic hill at around 864 meters above sea level, in the Gollak region.

  • The walls are about 2 meters thick, with rectangular towers on the north side.
  • It had two gates: a main gate for carts and a side gate for people on foot.
  • It may be the Kekola mentioned by the Byzantine historian Procopius of Caesarea, one of the Dardanian forts rebuilt by Emperor Justinian.

The site’s story goes back even further. Excavations since 2002 have uncovered a late Bronze Age Dardanian cemetery with 69 cremation burials and around 140 artifacts, one of the richest finds for Dardanian culture.
