THE TRAIL CODE.
The mountains belong to everyone. These are the rules we drive by, and how we keep the trails open for all.
01The eight rules
- 01
Stay on the trail
Drive only on existing trails and roads. Never cut new tracks through meadows or forest.
- 02
Through, not around
When there is mud or an obstacle, go over it or turn back. Driving around it widens the trail and damages the ground.
- 03
Respect villages and livestock
Slow down near houses and herds. Close any gate you open. Greet the shepherds: we are guests.
- 04
Fires only where allowed
Light fires only in fire pits, never in dry or windy weather. Drown it with water until it is completely cold.
- 05
Pack out your trash
What you bring into the mountains goes home with you. Leave it cleaner than you found it.
- 06
Protect heritage sites
Do not climb castle walls, move stones or take anything from historic sites.
- 07
Careful with water
Cross streams only where the trail crosses them. Never wash your vehicle or dishes in springs and creeks.
- 08
Never alone
On hard trails go with at least two vehicles. Tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.
02In national parks
The Accursed Mountains (Bjeshkët e Nemuna) and Sharr are national parks, with extra rules on driving, camping and fires. Follow the signs and the rangers’ instructions.
Call 112 and ask for SAR for mountain rescue. Save the number before you head out: there is often no signal in the mountains.
