The full gear list for offroading in Kosovo: what to always carry, recovery equipment, A/T vs M/T tires, lifts, and staying in touch with no signal.
You do not need the most expensive vehicle on the mountain. You need the right gear and to know how to use it. This list is split by level: what to carry always, what to add for Hard trails, and what your vehicle needs for Expert.
Travel first, modify second. Most Easy and Moderate trails in Kosovo are done in a stock 4x4. Learn your vehicle before you buy parts.
1. Always in the vehicle (every trail)
- Full-size spare, jack and wheel wrench
- Air compressor and pressure gauge: air down on the trail, air up before the tarmac
- Tire repair kit (plugs for punctures)
- Kosovo’s mandatory kit: reflective vest, warning triangle, first aid kit, fire extinguisher. See the Visitor Guide.
- Offline maps: download before you leave, the mountains often have no signal
- Water and food for one day more than you plan, a power bank
- Headlamp or torch, work gloves, a knife or multitool
2. Recovery gear (Hard and above)
When you get stuck in mud or rocks, this gets you out. Buy rated gear with a marked load, not random rope.
| Gear | What it does |
|---|---|
| Kinetic rope (or recovery strap) | Pull from another vehicle; a kinetic rope stretches for a smoother pull |
| Soft shackles | Safe connection between rope and vehicle |
| Traction boards | Under the tires in mud, sand or snow, when nobody can pull you |
| Shovel | Clears mud in front of the tires and under the vehicle |
| Rated recovery points | Bolted to the chassis. Never pull from a tow ball |
| Winch | For Expert and Extreme, when you are alone or on a slope |
A rope under tension can snap and fly. Keep people well to the side, drape a weight (jacket or bag) over the line, and never attach to a tow ball.
3. Tires: A/T or M/T?
| Type | Best for | Downsides |
|---|---|---|
| A/T (all-terrain) | Gravel, rocks, light mud, daily driving | Clog quickly in deep mud |
| M/T (mud-terrain) | Mud, big rocks, Expert trails | Louder, less grip on wet tarmac |
For most people in Kosovo a good A/T tire is the smart choice: commute on it during the week, hit the mountains at the weekend. M/T makes sense if you often drive muddy, shaded trails.
4. Lifts and protection
- A lift gives clearance and room for bigger tires. Start small (around 5 cm) with quality suspension.
- Skid plates protect the engine, gearbox and fuel tank from rocks.
- Differential lockers are for Extreme. They are not step one.
- Every modification changes how the vehicle drives on the road. Check local rules on approved tire and suspension changes first.
5. Staying in touch with no signal
- Radio FOL in the app: a walkie-talkie for your convoy, phone to phone, no signal needed.
- Convoy mode in the app: see every vehicle in your group on the map.
- For very remote areas, a satellite messenger is the best insurance.
- Save 112 and tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.

Frequently asked questions
Can I go offroad without any modifications?
Yes. Most Easy and Moderate trails in Kosovo can be done in a stock SUV or 4x4 on good tires. Modifications make sense for Expert trails.
How much should I air down?
It depends on the tire and vehicle. Many drivers drop around a third for more traction, but never so low the tire can come off the rim. Always air back up before the tarmac.
What is the most important recovery gear?
A friend in a second vehicle. After that: a rope, shackles and a shovel.
